Pan researches the physics, mechanics and modeling of fibrous materials, including textiles, paper and fiber-reinforced composites for properties such as constitutive relationships, strength, durability and interfacial phenomena. The fiber size can range from micro- to nanoscale. For example, when considering comfortable clothing, he considers factors including complex heat and moisture interactions in a three-body system of human, ambience and cloth. His research, which provides fundamental understanding of the performance and quality of existing fiber-containing products, is critical to innovation in new products, such as wearable technologies.
