How many students are in MSE?
In any given four year period spanning from Freshmen to Senior, there are about 68 students in Materials Science & Engineering.

What research facilities are connected to the majors?
The Materials Science & Engineering Department is committed to providing positive and practical training to all of its students. In addition, undergraduates participating in academic research will have use of the Department’s facilities.

What student clubs are connected with the majors?
The Material Advantage Student Chapter (MASC) is the organization for materials science undergraduates.  This student organization participates in Picnic Day, Preview Day, Decision Day, and many other events. For more information, please visit their website.

What kind of a job can I get with my degree?
Graduates with bachelor’s degrees are employed extensively throughout private industry. Firms actively seek our students for employment in the food and beverage processing industries, petroleum industry, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, biotech industry, and utility industries. Many students work for the federal or state government or do graduate work after graduation. The MSE curriculum equally prepares you for a career in industry, government, or academia.

How many students go on to graduate school?
About 10-15% of MSE Department graduates on to graduate school. In recent years our students have attend graduate schools such as Stanford, Harvard, UC Davis, and other UC schools.

How long does it take an incoming Freshman to graduate?
The MSE major can be completed in four years with a normal course load. Check here for a sample schedule.

Can a transfer student finish in two years?
Yes. A problem transfer students often face that leads to a longer stay is missing course work. It is recommended that a transfer student complete as much coursework as possible prior to admission to ensure a two year graduation.

Will I have contact with professors outside of class?
Yes. The MSE department has many activities for undergraduates including faculty advising and student clubs. The best way to work with professors outside class is to do undergraduate research.
