AOEP Undergraduate Apprenticeship Opportunity in MSE

The Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) is offering an apprenticeship for undergraduate students in the UC Davis Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).

The apprenticeship, which can run between a summer and an entire year, gives undergraduate students an opportunity to conduct hands-on, U.S. Army-supported research and gain experience in a laboratory while being mentored by top researchers across the country.

If selected for the UC Davis apprenticeship, students will be conducting real-world research in professor Ricardo Castro’s lab, which studies materials that can survive in extreme conditions such as ultra-high heat, force or radiation. Specifically, the apprenticeship will focus on materials coating technology, which can add extra layers of toughness and resistance to an object.

The program helps students gain a competitive edge while preparing for graduate school and their careers and helps them expand their professional networks, as well as gain experience with high-tech lab equipment.

Applications are open now through March 15.

About the Lab

Professor Ricardo Castro is the director of the Nanoceramic Thermochemistry Lab, which seeks to understand the nanoscale effects in ceramic materials and composites and how to optimally harness these effects when processing the materials. Aside from the Army, his group’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy.
