Meet Friends, Faculty and Materials Science and Engineering Professionals
The Material Advantage Student Chapter (MASC) is a national student organization run by some of the leading professional materials societies in the world, including the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST), ASM International and the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS). The UC Davis chapter provides undergraduate students with access to professional and academic resources from these organizations. Students from all majors are encouraged to participate.
In our organization, we aim to bring together students within and outside of the MSE department. We encourage our undergraduates to be more departmentally involved and offer undergraduate support in various areas to help them take full advantage of their education here at UC Davis. Transferable skills such as how to talk to professors, nailing interviews, and engaging with department research are all skills that we teach to our undergraduates that will help them in every aspect of their professional and academic lives here on out. Our department as a whole supports our students as we collaborate with our peers to complement the department’s priority of learning and the success of students through hands-on-learning.
At our weekly general meetings, we host various professional development workshops, tour the MSE Department’s research labs, and do fun group activities related to Materials Science and Engineering. Professional development workshops include resume building, 4-year course schedule planning, internship applications, undergraduate research Q&A, etc.. During these workshops, students have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with peers to share their professional and academic experiences.
Outside of weekly meetings, MASC also hosts socials, tours of research and industry labs, and puts on an annual Picnic Day Materials Magic Show production.

We really enjoy going on tours of national labs and companies in our area, collaborating with other engineering clubs and societies on campus, and inviting MSE professors to present about their research! You can also catch us putting on a materials magic show on Picnic Day.
