Opportunity: Assistant Professor of Teaching
Apply by November 29, 2021
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at UC Davis invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Teaching in Materials Science and Engineering, to join a department committed to student learning and success. This faculty member will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, particularly the two-course senior design sequence. Additionally, this person will oversee internships and projects for the one-year Masters of Engineering (M.Eng.) program, develop industry connections to facilitate the senior design and M.Eng. activities, and redesign and teach undergraduate laboratory courses on a wide variety of topics.
The Assistant Professor of Teaching title (with an official title of Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (LPSOE)) complements the research-focused Professor series at the University of California with an emphasis on excellence in teaching and student-centered efforts. Appointment conveys membership in the Academic Senate and, contingent upon promotion, security of employment that parallels tenure. Individuals holding the title are expected to be outstanding teachers, engage in professional development, and provide service to the Department and the University in the areas to include pedagogy, assessment, curricular innovation, and/or program accreditation.
The successful candidate will be an outstanding educator with a strong and demonstrable commitment to teaching. The department seeks candidates who are trained in some area of experimental materials science and engineering; candidates who have industry experience are especially desired. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree in materials science and engineering, or closely related fields. Participation in department, college, and university service is an expectation under our faculty shared governance model. We seek candidates who aspire to help advance UC Davis’ strategic goal of improving access and building an inclusive community for all marginalized populations, and who demonstrate commitment to, or strong potential for commitment to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion for historically underrepresented and marginalized student communities. We seek candidates dedicated to educating a student body rich in diversity with respect to gender, ethnicity, first-generation status, socioeconomic status, and academic inclusiveness.
We recommend candidates visit this website for information on the Statement of Contributions to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This Statement and the Statement on Teaching will be used together in an initial review of applicants that is blind to applicant names, affiliation, and other parts of the application.
